Using Anger Constructively In & Out of Psychotherapy

Webinar information:

Therapists and patients alike struggle with anger. Therapists need tools and emotional capacity to withstand their patient’s anger, they need tools to give their patients to recognize and use anger constructively, and they need to understand the difference between core and defensive anger. I love helping people with anger because anger is typically so hurtful and damaging but with knowledge and a few tools anger is better used with wisdom and thoughtfulness. We don’t get enough education in our formal schooling on how to use anger as a catalyst for change. When we bury it, we get depressed and anxious. When we unleash it, we harm our cherished relationships.

Join me, Hilary Jacobs Hendel, AEDP psychotherapist, supervisor, psychoanalyst, and author of the award-winning book "It’s Not Always Depression: Working the Change Triangle to Listen to the Body, Discover Core Emotions, and Connect to Your Authentic Self" (Random House & Penguin UK) to learn a new model for understanding and working with anger. Transform your work and yourself in this webinar for beginners and experienced clinicians and wellness professionals.

This course will provide an education in how anger works in the mind and body. Participants will learn how to use the Change Triangle, a psycho-educational tool and roadmap for creating positive neuroplasticity and brain integration that leads not only to symptom management but actual healing. Using a combination of didactic slides, real-time experiences, and videotaped psychotherapy sessions, participants will come away with new tools to understand and work with anger.

Participants will:

  • Explore and learn to use a range of effective tools for being with anger including: naming it, recognizing it in the body, grounding and breathing, guided imagery and fantasy portrayals.

  • Learn the difference between core and defensive anger.

  • Learn safe ways to release anger from the body.

  • Learn concrete ways to set limits and boundaries.

  • Experience mind-body approaches first-hand.

  • Begin to integrate mind-body skills into clinical practice with individuals and groups.

  • Learn the Change Triangle tool, a practical map for understanding how emotions work in the mind and body to help build a deeper connection with our authentic self and to connect more deeply with others.

  • Learn an effective holistic science-based tool to decrease anxiety and depression.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe and explain anger on the Change Triangle, a psychoeducational tool so therapists and clients understand why they have symptoms and understand a constructive path to working with anger.

  2. Identify core and inhibitory emotions and the defenses that block them to set the stage for change and transformation and specifically to ameliorate symptoms of depression and anxiety by working with anger.

  3. Apply techniques to create relational safety for moment-to-moment work to identify and process anger.

  4. Apply techniques to process buried anger and rage.

  5. Apply techniques to build confidence that therapists can invite client’s anger into the sessions
